How Local Elections Work in Our Borough
Following the last election on 2 May 2024, we are now moving into the next phase of the local electoral cycle. Here is a quick refresher on how the system works:
This staggered system ensures a level of continuity within the council while providing regular opportunities for residents to demand change or voice their approval.
Why Your Vote Matters
Councillors are the people who run your local authority. They make the critical decisions that determine which services are prioritised and how your council tax is spent.
Usually, the political party that secures the highest number of councillors takes control of the council. Your local councillor is your direct link to the town hall—they are there to represent the views of the specific ward where you live. Whether you have concerns about local planning, social services, or waste collection, your councillor is your voice.
A Note on the 2022 Boundary Review
You may remember that in 2022, every single one of the 60 councillor seats was contested at once. This was an 'all-out' election triggered by an electoral boundary review. During that year, voters could choose up to three candidates. In the upcoming 2026 election, we return to the standard cycle where you will typically vote for one candidate to fill the single seat available in your ward.
A Call to Candidates: Get Your Message Out

Following the last election on 2 May 2024, we are now moving into the next phase of the local electoral cycle. Here is a quick refresher on how the system works:
- Representation: There are three councillors representing each council ward in the borough.
- The Cycle: Councillors are elected for a four-year term. However, we do not elect everyone at once. Instead, we use a, "by thirds", system.
- The "Thirds" System: Elections take place in three out of every four years. This means that at each election, one-third of the council seats are up for grabs.
- Upcoming Dates: Following the 2026 vote, elections will follow in 2027 and 2028, with a 'rest' year in 2029, before the cycle begins again in 2030.
