Rochdale to Benefit from £2.5 Billion Transport Revolution as Government Unveils "Game Changing" Investment

Rochdale, UK - Rochdale is poised to experience a transport revolution following the announcement of a massive £2.5 billion investment in Greater Manchester's public transport network by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. The announcement, made during a visit to Mellor's electric bus factory in Rochdale this morning, forms part of a larger, more than fifteen billion pounds, national transport package.

The funding will pave the way for the introduction of next-generation tram-trains and significant improvements to the existing Metrolink service across Greater Manchester. The innovative tram-train technology, utilising battery power, allows vehicles to operate on both tram and rail tracks, eliminating the need for unsightly overhead lines. This advancement will dramatically expand the Metrolink network to across dozens of stations.

One of the most celebrated beneficiaries of this expansion will be Heywood, with Heywood and Middleton North MP Elsie Blundell hailing the announcement as a "transformational" moment for her constituency. The extension of the Metrolink to Heywood will provide residents with enhanced connectivity and access to opportunities across Greater Manchester.

The investment marks the next crucial stage of the Bee Network, an ambitious plan to create the UK's first fully electric, zero-emission integrated public transport system by 2030. The initiative will also see the introduction of around a thousand new electric buses, with many expected to be built at the Mellor factory in Rochdale, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham described the announcement as a "game changing moment," emphasising the vital role the new funding will play in supporting green growth and unlocking the region's economic potential over the next decade. The investment will also facilitate the extension of the Metrolink to Stockport town centre and bring further local rail lines into the Bee Network, creating a truly integrated and sustainable transport system for the region.

The investment promises to provide Rochdale and the wider Greater Manchester area with a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport system, connecting communities and driving economic growth for years to come. The focus on local manufacturing, in Rochdale, particularly at the Mellor factory, further underscores the commitment to creating jobs and supporting regional economies within the ambitious Bee Network project.
