Two Dead as Light Aircraft Crashes Onto Farmland in Littleborough
Littleborough – Two men have died after a light aircraft crashed onto farmland this morning, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 AM near the M62 in Littleborough. Emergency services, including police, fire, and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene following reports of a plane coming down.
The aircraft, identified as a Cirrus SR20, was carrying two people at the time of the crash. Police have confirmed that there were no survivors and stated that they do not believe there was anyone else on board.
Flight data indicates that the single-engine aircraft had taken off from Birmingham Airport at approximately 10:00 AM this morning. According to tracking information, the plane began to lose altitude shortly into the flight before crashing into farmland near Littleborough roughly an hour later.
In images shared on social media from the vicinity of the crash site, a parachute can be seen caught in a nearby electricity pylon. The Cirrus SR20 is a model known for being equipped with a whole-aircraft parachute system, designed to be deployed in the event of a critical emergency to lower the entire plane to the ground.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an investigation into the crash. A team has been dispatched to the site to determine the cause of the incident.
