Rochdale's Award-Winning 'Talk English' Project Appeals for New Volunteers
Rochdale, Greater Manchester – A celebrated council initiative that has helped thousands of local residents learn English is launching an urgent appeal for new volunteers to support its vital community work.
Rochdale Borough Council's 'Talk English' project, which marked its tenth anniversary last year, is seeking around 20 new people to join its team and help newcomers take their first steps in mastering the language.
The successful scheme, delivered in partnership with Hopwood Hall College, offers informal and friendly language classes across the borough. It serves as a crucial stepping stone for many, preparing learners for formal college courses and empowering them to integrate into local life, access essential services, and secure employment.
Since launching in 2014, the project has made a remarkable impact, supporting nearly 5,000 people from 85 different countries on their journey to learning English. Volunteers have been at the heart of this success, working alongside trained tutors to create a welcoming and encouraging environment.
The council is keen to stress that no formal teaching qualifications are required to get involved. The ideal volunteer simply needs strong communication skills, a patient and friendly attitude, and a willingness to help others. A commitment of around two hours per week during term time is requested, and full training is provided to all new recruits.
The initiative's contribution to the community has been recognised with multiple accolades, including the Diversity in Education Award at the 2015 Rochdale Diversity Awards and the Group of Volunteers Award in 2017.
With classes held at various venues across the borough, the council is now actively seeking more people to step forward and ensure the project’s continued success.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer and making a tangible difference in someone's life is encouraged to find out more.
