Rochdale Man Pleads Guilty to Online Threat Toward Former MP Simon Danczuk

Wigan, UK
– A 25-year-old man from Rochdale has pleaded guilty to sending an online threat to former Member of Parliament Simon Danczuk. The plea was entered at Wigan Magistrates’ Court, where Zaffar Hussain admitted to one count of sending grossly offensive or menacing messages through electronic communication.

The incident unfolded on February 26th, 2024, when Hussain communicated threats to Danczuk, who was actively campaigning for Reform UK in the Rochdale by-election following the death of Labour MP Tony Lloyd. Hussain's actions incurred the attention of law enforcement, leading to his arrest by Greater Manchester Police just a day later.

Danczuk, who served as the MP for Rochdale from 2010 to 2017, was seeking re-election during this contentious period, which ultimately concluded with George Galloway of the Workers Party winning the by-election on February 29th, 2024. Galloway held the seat for a brief period before Paul Waugh of the Labour Party re-captured it during the general election on July 4th.

While Hussain awaits sentencing, he is scheduled to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on February 25, 2026. Legal experts note that messages of this nature, particularly those directed toward public figures, can have serious legal repercussions.

The case comes at a time of heightened awareness regarding online threats and the responsibilities of individuals when communicating on social media and other platforms. Legal authorities remind the public that threats made online can lead to significant consequences, as demonstrated in this case.

Judge of the Wigan Magistrates’ Court has yet to release a statement regarding the next steps in the legal process for Hussain. Further developments are expected as this case garners attention amid ongoing discussions about online safety and the importance of respectful dialogue in political discourse.
