Man Arrested After Chasing Officers with Knife in Heywood Disturbance
Heywood, Greater Manchester – A man has been in police custody following a harrowing incident in Heywood on Sunday morning, where officers were allegedly threatened and chased down a residential street by a suspect wielding a knife.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the confrontation occurred after officers were called to reports of a disturbance on West Starkey Street at approximately 8:00 AM on Sunday, April 26th.
According to a spokesperson for the force, the situation escalated rapidly upon the arrival of the police. A man emerged from a property and came downstairs holding a knife, directed at the responding officers.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated that the man then proceeded to chase the officers along the street while still armed with the weapon. In a bid to protect themselves and the public, officers equipped themselves with a taser, which was successfully deployed to detain the suspect.
The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted Section 18 assault—a charge relating to wounding or causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
No injuries to the officers or members of the public were reported during the incident.
The suspect has remained in police custody as of Sunday afternoon, where he was being held for questioning by detectives.
West Starkey Street was briefly the centre of a police presence as investigations were carried out, though the scene has since returned to normal.
