Guide's Christmas Present Pays Off as 14-Year-Old Wins Regional Talent Crown

Whitworth, Rossendale – A Christmas present of singing lessons has proven to be a winning gift for a talented 14-year-old guide, who has been crowned the winner of a prestigious regional talent competition.

Alice Kowal, a student at Whitworth Community High School and a member of 11th Whitworth Guides and Rangers, has won the guide section of the Girlguiding North West England talent competition, beating entrants from across the region.

Alice has been a dedicated member of the guiding movement for eight years, having progressed from a Rainbow to a Brownie, and then a Guide, before recently moving into the Rangers section.

Her musical journey began early; she started Samba dancing at the age of three, later adding acting to her repertoire. Her passion for singing blossomed during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when she spent a lot of time singing at home. Recognising her talent and enthusiasm, her grandparents gifted her a course of professional singing lessons for Christmas—a gift she has continued to build upon ever since.

For the competition, Alice delivered a powerful solo performance of, ‘God Bless the Broken Road’, by Rascal Flatts, competing against fellow Guides from throughout the North West.

Alice didn't expect her fantastic win. After some time had passed without hearing anything, she assumed that she had been unsuccessful. The surprise came when she discovered she had not only been selected but had won the competition outright.

The judges, the Region Commissioners, were thoroughly impressed with her performance. They praised Alice’s cover of the song and specifically admired her dedication and confidence in singing.

While Alice is focused on her studies, she has her sights set on a future in the music industry. She is keen to pursue a career related to music, possibly as a sound engineer, or perhaps in a role helping others to write songs and create music.

Alice’s success highlights the supportive environment within Girlguiding, where the movement’s emphasis on building skills, confidence, and resilience helps young members achieve their personal best.
