Emergency Services Tackle Blaze at Derelict White Lion Pub in Heywood

Heywood, Greater Manchester — Emergency services were scrambled to a disused pub in Heywood on Sunday evening following another fire at the derelict site, prompting a full-scale response and a search for potential casualties.

The former White Lion pub on York Street, which has remained vacant since a fatal crash last year, caught fire shortly before 6 PM on January 18th. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the building as crews arrived to tackle the blaze.

Three fire engines from Rochdale and Bury were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters worked to extinguish flames on the first floor using hose reels and jets. Crews remained at the location for several hours afterward to carry out safety checks and ensure the structure was secure.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a systematic search of the building was conducted amid the firefighting operation. Thankfully, no casualties were found.

The pub has stood empty and boarded up since July 2024, when 23-year-old Will Place died after the car he was driving crashed into the building and caught fire. That incident occurred shortly after officers had attempted to stop the vehicle on nearby Bolton Road. The impact caused significant structural damage to the pub at the time.

Following that tragedy, the premises were secured and left derelict. It is currently unclear if Sunday’s fire is being treated as suspicious, though enquiries into the incident are underway.
