Firefighters Battle Large Blaze at Heywood Scrap Metal Yard; Roads Closed

Heywood, Greater Manchester – Emergency crews remain on the scene of a significant fire at a scrap metal yard in Heywood this evening, as firefighters work to bring a large blaze under control.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident on Bamford Road shortly after 4:00 PM on Saturday, May 2nd. Upon arrival, crews discovered a substantial fire involving a large quantity of material within the scrapyard.

Four fire engines from the Rochdale, Heywood, and Bury stations were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters have been working tirelessly throughout the day, utilising three main jets and two hose reel jets to suppress the flames and prevent the fire from spreading.

Greater Manchester Police have established a safety cordon around the site, resulting in the closure of a section of Bamford Road. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes, as the road is expected to remain closed while emergency operations continue.

While paramedics were also in attendance as a precautionary measure, there have been no immediate reports of injuries.

A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed that crews are working to make the area safe and ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. An investigation is expected to begin once the site has been deemed safe by fire investigators. Residents in the immediate vicinity will have likely been advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution against smoke.
