Crime Rates Plummet in Rochdale Town Centre Following Year One of ‘Operation Tetbury’

Rochdale, Greater Manchester – Crime and anti-social behaviour in Rochdale town centre have seen a marked decline over the past year, as police hail the success of a major initiative designed to transform the area’s safety and support its ongoing regeneration.

New performance figures released by Greater Manchester Police reveal that overall crime in the town centre dropped by approximately 25% between April 2025 and March 2026, compared to the previous 12-month period.

The initiative, known as Operation Tetbury, was launched to combat disorder and improve public perception of the town. The latest data suggests the strategy is delivering tangible results: neighbourhood crime, anti-social behaviour, and retail crime have all recorded significant reductions of around 30% each.

Additionally, the statistics show a downward trend in more serious crimes, with slight decreases in serious violence and sex offences. Recorded modern slavery offences had a sharp decline during the period.

While the majority of crime categories showed improvement, police noted that recorded drug and weapons offences rose by approximately 20%. Rather than indicating a rise in criminal activity, senior officers attribute this spike to the proactive nature of the operation. Increased patrols and intelligence-led stop-and-search operations have allowed officers to intercept offenders more effectively, taking more weapons and drugs off the streets.

Operation Tetbury is underpinned by the Home Office’s, “Clear, Hold, Build”, model. This long-term framework focuses on three phases: clearing an area of criminal activity, holding that space through consistent police presence, and working with partners to build lasting community improvements and economic stability.

Local officials believe the operation is acting as a catalyst for Rochdale’s wider regeneration efforts. By fostering a safer environment, the campaign aims to encourage more footfall, support local businesses, and fundamentally shift the public perception of the town centre.

Speaking on the impact of the project, authorities emphasised that the goal of Operation Tetbury is not just to police the area, but to provide the stability required for the community to thrive. As the initiative moves into its second year, GMP intends to maintain this high-visibility presence, promising to continue the proactive enforcement that has led to the recent rise in weapons and drug seizures.

For residents and business owners in Rochdale, the figures offer a promising sign that the town centre is becoming a safer, more welcoming destination for visitors and families alike.
