The seven schools joining the programme are:
These schools join Bamford Academy, Broadfield Community Primary School, and Springside, which are already successfully running the scheme.
The national programme is designed to ensure that primary-aged pupils receive a nutritious breakfast before their morning lessons begin. It also offers practical support for working parents by allowing children to arrive at school up to 30 minutes early, at no extra cost.
The financial and logistical benefits for local families are substantial. It is estimated that participating households could save up to £450 a year per child in food costs, while also gaining up to 95 additional hours of childcare at the start of the school day over the course of the academic year.
Rochdale Council has strongly welcomed the expansion, highlighting the direct link between nutrition and academic success. According to the council, eating a healthy breakfast before school has been proven to improve children's literacy and numeracy skills, while also helping them maintain focus and positive behaviour in the classroom.
While the expansion of this national programme marks a major milestone, the council noted that other schools across the borough also continue to provide independent breakfast clubs and various forms of morning food support to ensure no child starts the day hungry.
