Devastating Blaze Rips Through Rochdale Garage, Sending Plumes of Smoke Over Town Centre
Rochdale, Greater Manchester, UK – August 7th, 2025 – A major fire involving a vehicle and a shipping container has ripped through a commercial garage on Jermyn Street in Rochdale, sending huge plumes of black smoke billowing over the town centre and causing concern among onlookers.
Emergency services were called to the scene on the edge of Rochdale town centre at approximately 6:15 PM on the evening of Monday, August 7th. Aerial images from the site reveal the extensive devastation caused by the blaze.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with one stating that onlookers were 'panicked' by the intensity of the fire and the fear that it might spread to surrounding areas. The thick black smoke engulfed the area, visible from a considerable distance.
Four fire engines from Rochdale, Littleborough, and Heywood fire stations swiftly attended the incident. Crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control, utilising three hose reels, a 45mm diameter water jet, a drone for aerial assessment, and an aerial platform ladder to extinguish the flames.
Although the main blaze has been brought under control, firefighters remained on the scene for several hours, using specialist equipment to continue 'damping down' the area to prevent any reignition.
Greater Manchester Police were also in attendance, assisting with road cordons to ensure public safety and allow emergency services to operate effectively. As a result, Rugby Road, James Street, and the top section of Jermyn Street remained closed into the evening. Buses were also diverted away from Yorkshire Street due to the ongoing incident.
