Rochdale Man Jailed For 'Chilling' Hammer Attack After Luring Acquaintance From Home
Rochdale, Greater Manchester – A 68-year-old Rochdale man who launched a 'chilling' hammer attack on an elderly acquaintance after luring him from his isolated home has been jailed for six-and-a-half years.
David Cachia, of Harvey Street, armed himself with a claw hammer and a knife wrapped in newspaper before arriving at his 76-year-old victim's house, located down an isolated road in Rochdale, in June last year.
Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard that Cachia rang the Ring doorbell before hiding behind bins around the corner. When the unsuspecting victim emerged from his home and asked if he was okay, Cachia approached him and declared, "No I’m not, I’m going to kill you".
Cachia then launched a brutal assault, striking the 76-year-old man to the head with the hammer. He continued the attack, hitting him at least two further times, including to the ribs, until the victim was knocked to the ground.
During the violent struggle, the victim's wife bravely intervened and managed to get the hammer from Cachia. Amidst the chaos, the victim bit Cachia as he was being punched to the mouth, while Cachia reiterated his chilling threat.
When police arrived at the scene, Cachia produced a large knife, wrapped in newspaper, from his coat pocket and threw it to the floor.
The victim was rushed to hospital, where he received treatment for significant head wounds, a skull fracture, and injuries to his ribs. The court was told he has since been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), further compounded by depression and anxiety.
Sentencing Cachia as a dangerous offender under Sentencing Guidelines, Judge Mark Savill described the offence as, "chilling and inexplicable", adding that it was, "deliberately planned and premeditated".
Cachia was handed a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence, of which he will serve two-thirds behind bars. Upon his release, he will be subject to an extended five-year licence period. A restraining order has also been imposed, banning Cachia from contacting his victim. He had previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of a bladed article.
