Balderstone & Kirkholt: Why Current Housing Leadership is Failing Our Community
At the centre of this growing frustration is Councillor Daniel Meredith. As the portfolio holder for regeneration and housing, as well one of the representatives for the ward, the responsibility for the current state of our neighbourhoods falls squarely on his shoulders. Unfortunately, for many living here, his tenure has been marked not by, "regeneration", but by a steady decline in the quality of life.
A Community Under Siege
The primary outcry from Rochdale residents involves a surge in anti-social behavior (ASB) stemming from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) tenants. What should be a quiet, community-focused area has, for many, become a gauntlet of harassment and hostility.
This isn't just an issue for those in social housing. The ripple effects have devastated private renters and local landlords who find themselves trapped in a cycle of abuse that the authorities seem unwilling or unable to stop. Years of ongoing harassment have left neighbours feeling abandoned by the very person elected to protect their interests.
Dismissive Leadership
Perhaps most stinging are the reports that Councillor Meredith has been suspected of disparaging private renters regarding their living situations. Instead of offering solutions or advocacy for victims who have suffered years of systemic neglect, the sentiment from the cabinet office often feels dismissive.
When those in power look down on the people they serve—especially those who are working hard to maintain their properties in the face of neighbourhood decay—it signals a profound disconnect. If a cabinet member for housing cannot empathise with the plight of a resident facing daily abuse, how can he be expected to fix the problem?
A Changing Neighborhood and Growing Hostility
There is an uncomfortable reality on the ground that many feel is being ignored for the sake of political correctness. Residents have noted that much of the oppressive conduct and abuse is being perpetrated by individuals who appear to be White illegal immigrants.
Ironically, the victims of this recurring hostility are often British citizens with deep, multi-generational roots in the community—the very, "backbone", of Balderstone and Kirkholt. This dynamic has created an atmosphere of tension and unfairness, where long-standing residents feel like second-class citizens in their own ward, while the illegal activities and anti-social behaviour of others go unchecked.
Seeking an Escape
The situation has become so dire that many residents are no longer looking for, "regeneration", from the council; they are looking for an exit. We are seeing a trend of families desperately seeking transfers to properties managed by Mosscare St. Vincents or searching for private rentals that are untainted by the crimes and hostilities associated with RBH-managed areas.
When a community’s primary goal becomes escape, the local leadership has failed.
The Bottom Line: Your Vote Matters
The logic facing Balderstone Kirkholt residents is simple. We are told that the Labour Party represents the working person and the local community. Yet, under Daniel Meredith’s watch, the abuse continues, the housing crisis worsens, and the voices of long-term residents are sidelined. residents are even left unable to word and may already have underlying health problems, made worse by abuse.
Why should the residents of this ward waste their time voting for another Labour councillor if the extent of this damage remains unresolved? If the current leadership cannot—or will not—address the anti-social behaviour and the demographic tensions tearing our streets apart, then they do not deserve the privilege of representing us.
It is time to demand more than just, "regeneration", on a leaflet. We need safety, we need accountability, and we need a councillor who puts the residents of Balderstone Kirkholt first. If they won't provide it, we must find someone who will.
