A.I. Safety Technology for Rail Networks: Heywood Manufacturer Has Been Developing Cutting Edge Technology

Heywood, Greater Manchester, UK – A Heywood-based manufacturer is set to play a pivotal role in the future of international transport safety with the launch of a new artificial intelligence system designed for driverless rail networks.

GJD Manufacturing has announced that its cutting-edge detection technology is expected to hit the market in 2026. The system addresses one of the most significant safety hurdles facing the automated rail industry: the risk of objects or passengers falling into the gap between the train carriage and the platform.

The system utilises a sophisticated combination of high-tech sensors and A.I. to monitor the platform edge. Crucially, the company states the A.I. is trained to distinguish genuine hazards from environmental interference—such as light reflections, shadows, or adverse weather—which frequently trigger false alarms in existing systems. By minimising these, "false positives", the technology aims to improve passenger safety while drastically reducing the service disruptions that currently hamper automated networks.

The project is the culmination of years of intensive research and development conducted at GJD’s Heywood facility. Since 2017, the firm has established itself as a hub for innovation, frequently collaborating with industry partners and academic institutions, including a high-profile project with Manchester Metropolitan University to develop a long-range scanner.

The move is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy. GJD anticipates that the project will create new, specialist roles in Heywood, specifically in the fields of artificial intelligence and sensor engineering.

The reach of the technology is expected to extend far beyond Greater Manchester. As cities across Europe, Asia, and Australia continue to invest heavily in driverless infrastructure, GJD is positioning the system for large-scale export to international markets.

While the primary focus remains on the rail sector, the company has hinted that the technology's applications are versatile. Future iterations of the A.I.-sensor could be adapted for use in high-end perimeter security systems, providing advanced protection for sensitive sites.

As the 2026 launch approaches, GJD Manufacturing’s latest venture highlights the growing role of North West firms in the global, "smart city", and autonomous technology sectors.
