Middleton's Regeneration Accelerated by New Mayoral Development Corporation, Led by Steve Coogan and Rose Marley, Championing Sustainable Growth

Middleton's ongoing regeneration efforts have received a significant boost with the official establishment of a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) for the town. This new body is set to dramatically advance local development and attract crucial new investment, propelling the area's transformation.

The Middleton MDC will be co-chaired by acclaimed actor and comedian Steve Coogan, a native of the town, and Rose Marley, chief executive of Co-operatives UK. Mayoral Development Corporations are powerful instruments, leveraging Greater Manchester mayoral powers to stimulate growth and secure additional investment, directly accelerating an area's revitalisation.

In a move reflecting Rochdale borough's pioneering status as the birthplace of the co-operative movement, the Middleton MDC will operate on deeply ingrained co-operative principles. This unique approach aims to ensure broad community involvement, giving everyone a voice, and ensuring the equitable distribution of wealth generated within the town, fostering a truly inclusive regeneration.

This latest initiative builds upon a foundation of prior regeneration successes already witnessed in Middleton. These include the establishment of the Middleton Arena, the comprehensive redevelopment of Middleton Gardens, and the sensitive restoration of numerous historic structures throughout the town centre.

Central to the council's forward-looking plans, and long-lobbied for by local councillors, is the ambitious extension of the Metrolink tram network to Middleton. Complementing this vital transport link, a key environmental objective is the creation of high-quality new homes specifically on disused brownfield plots. This strategic choice not only reclaims and reinvigorates neglected industrial or commercial land but also safeguards precious green spaces, aligning with a broader commitment to sustainable development and a reduced environmental footprint for the town.

Further proposals under the MDC's remit include the development of high-quality business premises, alongside significant enhancements to public areas, road networks, and pathways. These improvements are all designed to create a more vibrant, accessible, and environmentally conscious urban environment for residents and businesses alike. The launch of the Middleton MDC signals a new era of proactive and community-focused development, poised to deliver lasting positive change for the town and its residents.
