Middleton's 'Dead Spot' Days Could End as Three Major 5G Masts Proposed

Middleton, Greater Manchester – Middleton's long-standing reputation as a mobile network 'dead spot' could soon be a thing of the past, as ambitious plans have been tabled for three new high-capacity 5G masts across the town. The proposals, which include masts ranging from 20 to 30 metres in height, aim to significantly boost 4G and 5G connectivity across the Rochdale borough.

The lack of reliable mobile signal has been a persistent frustration for residents and businesses in Middleton, prompting a sustained campaign from Heywood and Middleton North MP Elsie Blundell to improve the local network infrastructure.

Telecoms company Cornerstone is behind two of the three proposed structures. The first of these, a 20-metre mast, is planned for Cinder Hill Farm, located off Thornham Lane. The second Cornerstone proposal is for a 25-metre mast to be built on land at Middleton Cricket Club, off Hollin Lane.

A third, even taller mast, measuring 30 metres high, has been put forward by a separate provider, JET Network Solutions Ltd. This substantial tower is slated for construction on land at North Manchester Golf Club, situated off Manchester Old Road.

If approved by local planners, all three towers would be erected with essential equipment cabinets at their bases, supporting antennae and dishes designed to broadcast the enhanced mobile signals.

These local initiatives are part of a broader national strategy, reflecting the government’s commitment to driving ‘next-generation connectivity’ across the UK. The overarching aim is to achieve nationwide gigabit broadband and 5G coverage by 2030, ensuring communities like Middleton are no longer left behind in the digital age. The proposals now await a decision from Rochdale Borough Council.
