Building Crumbles in Heywood After Early Morning Collision, Driver Arrested

Heywood, Greater Manchester - A significant portion of a building on Bridge Street in Heywood town centre has been reduced to rubble following a high-speed collision in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident, which occurred shortly after 4 AM, saw a car smash into the front of a local takeaway, causing extensive damage and a large police and emergency services response.

The dramatic crash has left Bridge Street cordoned off in both directions and sparked a major clean-up operation. Debris and bricks were strewn across the road, with the shop front and the upstairs rooms of the affected property left completely exposed. A silver car was seen crushed beneath a heap of rubble. Diggers have since been brought in to clear the wreckage.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that officers were initially responding to reports of a disturbance at an address on Walmersley Road in Bury. A man reportedly left the scene in a car, triggering a police pursuit. The vehicle then careered off the road, striking the building on Bridge Street at speed.

A man in his 30s was attended to by paramedics and subsequently taken to hospital. He has since been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, and threats to kill.

The owners of the takeaway, Heywood Star, have expressed their regret at being unable to open. In a statement posted online, they said: "We regret to inform our valued customers that we are unable to operate today till further notice due to an unexpected accident that occurred outside our takeaway this morning. Thankfully, everyone is safe from our knowledge, but the situation has made it impossible for us to open and serve as usual. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and continued support during this time. We’ll keep you updated and hope to be back soon".

The road closure is in effect from St. James Street to Garden Street. Council officials have also been called to the scene, and an investigation into the structural safety of the damaged building is underway. Onlookers gathered at the edge of the cordon throughout the afternoon to witness the extensive clean-up efforts.
