Work Begins on Major Transformation of Heywood's Peine Square
Heywood, Greater Manchester – The heart of Heywood is set for a significant facelift as work gets underway on the ambitious transformation of Peine Square. The project promises to create a vibrant, modern public space for residents and visitors alike.
The revamp, situated in front of the town's civic centre, will introduce new green spaces, contemporary paving and lighting, and a variety of new seating options. A key feature of the redesign is its focus on community and cultural events. The plans include tiered seating, dedicated performance and exhibition areas, a mini stage, and an integrated power supply to support public gatherings. Informal play areas will also be installed to make the square more family-friendly.
This development is the first flagship project to be delivered using funding from the government’s £20 million ‘Plan for Neighbourhoods’ investment in the town. Local contractor Conlons has been appointed to carry out the works.
Decisions on how the multi-million-pound fund is allocated are being made by the newly formed Heywood Town Board. The board is a local group comprised of community members, local councillors, and Heywood and Middleton MP, Elsie Blundell, ensuring that spending is directed by those with deep knowledge of the area's needs.
The work to redevelop Peine Square complements the wider regeneration efforts in Heywood town centre. It follows on the heels of a multi-million-pound scheme to extend and modernise the adjacent Heywood Civic Centre, a project being funded separately by the Arts Council and Rochdale Borough Council.
The £20 million government funding is part of a long-term strategy and will be made available in phases over the next ten years. A more detailed investment plan, outlining how the remainder of the cash will be used to improve the town, is set to be submitted to the government before the end of the year.
