Three Rochdale Council Bin Workers Injured in Violent Road Rage Attack in East Middleton
East Middleton — Three Rochdale Council refuse collectors were assaulted during a violent confrontation while on their collection round on Tuesday morning, leaving at least one worker requiring hospital treatment for significant injuries.
The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 10th February, on Mount Road, near its junction with Uplands in Alkrington. According to reports, the altercation stemmed from a road rage dispute involving members of the public and the bin crew staff.
Councillor Dylan Williams, who represents the East Middleton ward, confirmed the attack in a public statement, condemning the violence directed at the workers while they were carrying out their duties.
Councillor Williams, who also chairs the council’s Employment and Equalities Committee, revealed that the workers sustained serious physical injuries during the assault. He is thought to be aware that at least one crew member was taken to hospital with reported injuries, including broken ribs and loose teeth.
The councillor explained that while he had initially hesitated to publicise the incident, he decided to speak out after witnessing a video of the confrontation being shared on social media. He expressed concern that the footage appeared to trivialise and make light of the violence inflicted on the council staff.
Greater Manchester Police have been notified of the incident, and an investigation is now underway. Rochdale Council is understood to be providing full support to the injured workers and is co-operating with the police inquiry.
Authorities are urging anyone with further information regarding the incident on Mount Road to contact Greater Manchester Police.
