Local Enforcement Drives Safety on Queensway: 36 Stops Made in Vision Zero Push

Queensway, Rochdale – Local neighbourhood officers conducted a targeted traffic enforcement operation on Queensway this Tuesday, resulting in 36 vehicle stops and numerous actions taken against unsafe driving behaviours.

The operation was launched in direct response to recent concerns raised by residents regarding road safety, reinforcing the force’s robust commitment to Vision Zero—the international strategy dedicated to eliminating all fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.

PC Dan Richards, who oversaw the operation, confirmed the focus was on critical risk factors that frequently lead to collisions and severe injuries.

"Your local neighbourhood officers were out on Queensway again addressing concerns raised by members of the public recently, as part of our commitment to Vision Zero", PC Richards stated. "We aim to reduce harm, prevent collisions, and save lives on our roads".

Operation Results Highlight Key Safety Breaches

During the concentrated effort, officers intercepted 36 vehicles, resulting in the detection of dangerous behaviours and vehicle compliance issues. The data highlights ongoing issues with key safety legislation:

Mobile Phone Use: Three drivers were stopped and penalised for illegally using a mobile phone while driving, a distraction proven to significantly increase collision risk.
Safety Belts: Four drivers were issued fixed penalty notices for failing to wear a seatbelt.
Vehicle Seizures: Officers issued two Section 165 notices, resulting in the seizure of vehicles of which is usually primarily due to drivers operating without valid insurance or a proper license.
Vehicle Non-Conformity: Four vehicles were found to be non-conforming, likely related to defects or illegal modifications that compromise safety.
Minor Offences: One driver was dealt with for driving without due care and attention, and eight drivers received immediate words of advice for minor infractions, ensuring compliance without formal penalty. One incident also required officers to verify the validity of a driver’s license documentation.

Alignment with National Safety Strategies

This targeted enforcement is integral to the overarching Vision Zero framework, which seeks to create a 'Safe System' for all road users.

The enforcement actions on Queensway align specifically with the five pillars of the Safe System, aiming to improve:

Safe Behaviours: Targeting mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance.
Safe Speeds: Promoting responsible driving and attention (due care and attention).
Safe Vehicles: Addressing non-conforming vehicles and ensuring drivers are properly licensed and insured.

By addressing these core areas, the local force aims to significantly reduce harm, prevent future collisions, and save lives in the community.

Residents are encouraged to report persistent dangerous driving concerns directly to local officers.
