Blunt Character Assassination: 1991 Movie “Backdraft” Utilised for Rochdale’s Scapegoating Campaign
Rochdale, Greater Manchester — The disturbing pattern of racial harassment and co-ordinated scapegoating which has surfaced in Rochdale, shows more of its foundations, as local families are reportedly using imagery from the 1991 firefighting thriller Backdraft to fuel animosity against residents with visible brown skin.
At the centre of the controversy is a reported agreement between members of the McCondichie family and several individuals within the Eves family, being groomed into their Nazi based fascist politics. According to community reports, these groups have conspired to weaponise the concept of a, "backdraft"—a lethal phenomenon where a fire explodes when oxygen is introduced through a doorway—as a metaphor for racial hatred.
The perpetrators have allegedly characterised people with brown skin as malicious actors who actively desire the deaths of White firefighters. By twisting the narrative of the film, which depicts the heroism and dangers of fire service, the instigators have created a localised conspiracy theory that paints long-term residents as haters of emergency first responders.
The harassment has reportedly manifested in a specific, one-word heckle: "Backdraft!"
Witnesses are aware that this phrase is being used as a, "dog whistle", to radicalise younger Rochdale residents. The perpetrators seek to create a sense of shared, exclusionary identity among local youth, enticing them into a culture of racial division and fear-mongering.
The use of the, "Backdraft", slur is seen by many as a troubling evolution of localised historic confusion, moving from generalised insults to a specific, narrative-driven form of character assassination.
