Greater Manchester Police Boosts Speed Enforcement with Two New Camera Vans
Greater Manchester, United Kingdom – Greater Manchester Police has bolstered its road safety efforts with the introduction of two new specialist speed enforcement vehicles, increasing its dedicated fleet from three to five vans. The move aims to directly tackle dangerous driving and reduce the devastating impact of excessive speeding across the region.
The additional vehicles will be operated by GMP's Safety Camera Unit and are set to be deployed across all ten Greater Manchester districts. Their deployment will be strategically guided by a combination of data analysis, intelligence, and crucial community reports, targeting 'hotspot' areas where speeding has been identified as a particular concern.
Police officials have stated that the increased visibility of these enforcement vans will play a vital role in deterring excessive speeders. Excessive speeding remains one of the primary factors contributing to fatal and serious collisions on the region's roads, making this expansion a critical step in improving road safety.
The funding for these new resources has been provided by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) on behalf of the Greater Manchester Road Safety Partnership. This initiative forms a key component of the wider, "Vision Zero", strategy, an ambitious commitment to eliminate all deaths and life-changing injuries on Greater Manchester’s roads by 2040.
The enhanced enforcement capability will support a range of activities, including targeted speed enforcement operations, rapid deployment to locations specifically highlighted by concerned residents and elected representatives, and broader road safety educational campaigns. The force acknowledges that community concerns about prevalent speeding are widespread, with areas like Rochdale frequently raising the issue.
With these additional resources, GMP and its partners are reaffirming their commitment to creating safer roads for all users and actively working towards the ambitious Vision Zero objective for a future free from road fatalities and life-altering injuries.
