Rochdale Brewers Unite to Craft Special Ale for Town of Culture Celebrations

Rochdale’s thriving independent brewing scene is raising a glass to the borough’s upcoming year as Greater Manchester Town of Culture, with a collaborative new ale set to debut this August. Five local breweries are teaming up to produce a limited-edition beer, celebrating Rochdale’s prestigious 2025/26 title.

The unique pale or golden ale, crafted using all-British hops, is expected to be available on draught in pubs across the borough from mid-August, with bottled versions to follow later in the year. The breweries pooling their expertise for this celebratory brew are Wakey Wakey Brew Company, Twisted Mule Brewery, Brid’s Cross Brewing, the Serious Brewing Company, and The Flying Horse Hotel. The ale's name is yet to be announced.

Beyond local pubs, there are ambitious plans to introduce the taste of Rochdale culture to Westminster. Rochdale MP Paul Waugh is actively working to get the special ale stocked in Strangers’ Bar at the House of Commons, offering politicians and staff a literal taste of the borough’s cultural credentials.

This week, Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Janet Emsley and MP Paul Waugh visited the Wakey Wakey Brew Company to participate in early tastings and discuss the project's progression with the brewers. They were joined by representatives from CAMRA’s Rochdale, Oldham and Bury branch and the Rochdale Business Improvement District (BID) team, both providing key support for the initiative.

The commemorative ale is one of many creative projects lined up for Rochdale’s year as Town of Culture. More than 35 local arts organisations are preparing a packed programme of events, exhibitions, and performances. The comprehensive celebrations aim to honour Rochdale’s rich past, including its pivotal role as the birthplace of the co-operative movement, while simultaneously promoting new ideas and nurturing emerging talent within the community.

The entire cultural year is being coordinated by Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale Development Agency, working in close partnership with the borough’s diverse arts sector. The initiative also benefits from significant backing from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Arts Council England.
