Middleton Gymnastics Club Flips into New Era with £900,000 State-of-the-Art Facility

Middleton, Greater Manchester – A beloved local gymnastics club with a legacy spanning more than four decades has secured its future, tumbling into a brand-new, state-of-the-art home thanks to a £900,000 council-backed investment.

Middleton Gymnastics Club, founded in 1982, has been a cornerstone of the community, providing training and support for tens of thousands of children and young people. With members regularly competing at a regional level, the club had outgrown its long-time base on Bowness Road, which no longer met its modern needs.

Recognising the club's importance, Rochdale Borough Council stepped in to orchestrate a move. By securing developer contributions, the council funded the transformation of an unused gym at Bowlee Community Primary School on Windermere Road into a premier gymnastics facility.

The new site is a significant upgrade, covering more than 1,000 square metres – more than double the size of the club's previous home. The extensive refurbishment has equipped the space with brand-new apparatus, including a full-size floor area for routines, a competition-standard trampoline, and an upgraded vaulting station, allowing gymnasts to train with the best possible equipment.

The investment extends beyond the gym walls. The project also includes significant improvements to local infrastructure, with the creation of 40 new parking spaces. This will ease congestion and benefit not only the gymnastics club’s members but also visitors to the adjacent Langley Library, Langley Family Hub, and parents at Bowlee Community Primary School.

The redevelopment was carried out by local firm H Bells and Sons, with the funding drawn from the wider Langley masterplan. This ambitious scheme, which is now nearing completion, has delivered new housing, improved public spaces, and other vital infrastructure upgrades across the area.

Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and cooperation, posted to Facebook: "By helping generations of kids to get fit, learn new skills and make friends, it has made a huge contribution to the wider community and we are more than happy to support them as they embark on their next chapter. We hope this new venue will help them continue for many more decades to come".

With its new, modern home, Middleton Gymnastics Club is now poised to build on its 40-year history of success, ready to welcome and train the next generation of local athletes.
