Manhunt Launched for Convicted Drug Dealer Sentenced to Six Years After 140mph Police Chase
Peterborough – A nationwide manhunt is underway for a convicted drug dealer from Rochdale who was sentenced in his absence to more than six years in prison after leading police on a terrifying 140mph chase through Peterborough.
Ateeq Rehman, 25, failed to appear at Peterborough Crown Court for his sentencing on October 17th. A judge proceeded to sentence him to six years and four months in prison, and a warrant has now been issued for his arrest.
Rehman, of Surma Close, Rochdale, had been found guilty by a jury following a trial of being concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin, and a separate charge of acquiring, using, or possessing criminal property. He had previously admitted to a charge of dangerous driving in connection with the dramatic pursuit that led to his capture in July 2023.
The court heard that Rehman was a key figure in the Rochdale-based 'Adam' drugs line, which used mobile phones to coordinate the transportation and sale of Class A drugs from Greater Manchester to Peterborough between November 2022 and July 2023.
His criminal operation came to a dramatic end when police officers spotted him driving a black BMW in Peterborough at around 7 PM last July. When officers attempted to stop him, Rehman sped off, hitting speeds of 70 miles per hour in the residential streets of Eastfield, where he, "narrowly missed a pedestrian", according to Cambridgeshire Police.
The pursuit then escalated onto the Frank Perkins Parkway, where Rehman reached a staggering 140 miles per hour. A police spokesperson stated, "He weaved in and out of traffic, through red traffic lights and ignored keep left signs".
The abandoned BMW was later discovered in Back Lane, Eye. Rehman was found hiding in a nearby alleyway and arrested. Officers recovered a Gucci bag containing wraps of heroin and crack cocaine, approximately £1,700 in cash, and an iPhone which provided the crucial link to the drugs line.
Detective Constable Lloyd Davis of Cambridgeshire Police urged the public to help locate the fugitive.
"Rehman was involved in the selling of illegal and incredibly harmful drugs in the county through the 'Adam' drugs line", said Detective Constable Davis. "Drugs lines of this nature are also known to exploit vulnerable people. I would urge anyone who knows of Rehman’s whereabouts to contact police as soon as they can. Communities in this country will be safer when he is properly brought to justice, and he is behind bars where he belongs".
In addition to his jail term, Rehman was banned from driving for five years and two months. Police are appealing for anyone with information on his location to come forward.
