Saddleworth PCSO Praised and Nominated for Award After Saving Man's Life During Routine Patrol

Saddleworth, Greater Manchester – A Greater Manchester Police community support officer has been widely praised after his quick thinking and immediate intervention helped save the life of a man found unconscious in a van during a routine patrol in Saddleworth. PCSO Lowther, who serves with the Saddleworth neighbourhood policing team, has now been nominated for an award in recognition of his actions.

The life-saving incident occurred in April when PCSO Lowther was carrying out routine patrols on Ripponden Road. His vigilance was piqued when he spotted a van parked in a remote location with its engine running and lights still on.

After initial attempts to get the occupant’s attention received no response, PCSO Lowther prudently opened the rear doors of the vehicle. Inside, he discovered a man in significant distress.

According to Greater Manchester Police, PCSO Lowther acted swiftly and decisively. He immediately activated his emergency button, providing crucial updates to control room staff while simultaneously intervening to preserve the man’s life.

Thanks to PCSO Lowther's prompt and effective actions, the man quickly regained consciousness. The officer then took the additional safety measure of removing the vehicle keys from the ignition before continuing to engage with the man until further Greater Manchester Police officers arrived at the scene.

The man was subsequently taken to Royal Oldham Hospital for further treatment and support.

Sergeant Ryan Orme, from GMP’s Oldham Response Unit, commended PCSO Lowther’s decisive actions.

Reflecting on the dramatic turn of events, PCSO Lowther himself acknowledged how quickly a seemingly routine patrol can evolve into a challenging and life-changing situation.

Greater Manchester Police has suggested that PCSO Lowther should be formally nominated for an award, recognising his exceptional and life-saving actions that day.
